API

β€œApplication Programming Interface.” A set of rules in programming that acts as the β€œmiddleman” between two different software and enables them to communicate with one another. Examples: Google Maps, Weather App, Pay with PayPal.

ASMR

β€œAutonomous sensory meridian response.” A pleasant tingling sensation that starts at the base of the skull and travels down the spine. It’s stimulated by soft sounds, such as tapping, whispering, and humming. It’s also a YouTube content niche.

Automation

The process of setting something up to operate automatically and with little to no human input. Example: a social media post scheduler, which automatically publishes posts on the date set.

Ask Me Anything

A phrase used on social media to invite one’s followers to ask the creator of the post anything they want. Also known by its acronym, β€œAMA.”

Algorithm

A set of rules or commands that a social media platform utilizes to curate content for its users. Examples of rules that a social media algorithm might use are: relevance, popularity, keyword usage, hashtags, and engagement rate.

Authenticity

A quality that refers to how authentic – i.e., honest, genuine – a person or brand is on social media. It’s also sometimes used by social media platforms to decide which posts from which accounts to show to its users in their content feeds.

Analytics

An aspect of digital marketing which involves taking in large amounts of data and sorting through them to discover patterns. These patterns can inform more targeted, and more effective marketing campaigns. Examples: target audience demographics and behaviors.

Audience

A group of people that consume content put out by marketers, brands, and influencers on the internet. An audience is essential for helping you grow your sphere of influence, become famous, and/or convert sales.

Affiliate Marketing

A type of marketing in which an influencer on social media becomes an affiliate of another brand or business and markets their goods/services on their channel.

Ads

Marketing materials which advertise goods/services to an audience. In the context of digital marketing, ads include in-video commercials, text, images, or pop-ups across a webpage. Also known as β€œadvertisements.”

Aesthetic

A word that refers to your unique conception of what is pleasing or beautiful to the eye, smell, or other senses. It can also apply to a business or influencer’s style of branding or content creation. Example: β€œMinimalism is my lifestyle brand’s aesthetic.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

A computer or program that is designed to be able to perform intelligent tasks, such as data analysis, text generation, and translation. Examples: ChatGPT, Grok, and Google Translate.

Avatar

A character or persona that stands in for a real human being in a video game, on social media, or in virtual reality. Example: Metaverse Avatars.

Adwords

The former name of the advertising system that is now known as Google Ads. See Google Ads definition below.

Brand reputation

The way an audience perceives or feels about a brand. A brand’s reputation is established by the way it conducts business, treats its customers, and markets themselves online; as well as by the quality of their goods/services.

Best Time

Refers to the optimal time of the day and week to post on social media to receive maximum exposure and engagement. Example: Best Time to Post on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.

Best Practices

Refers to the best practices in digital marketing and social media that all brands and influencers should use if they want to build a following and maintain consistent growth.

Brand

The aspect of a business that is seen by and marketed to the public to distinguish it from all its competitors. It includes the business name, logo, color scheme, aesthetic, and values.

Bot Followers

Social media followers that are not operated by real people but run on automated programs. They provide no meaningful engagement and are typically removed by social media platforms as they are discovered.

Brand authenticity

Refers to the authenticity of a brand, i.e., how honest and genuine a brand is in its business dealings and interactions with customers. It also refers to how well its actions align with its values.

Blue Checkmark

A checkmark next to the name on a social media profile. It’s an indicator that that profile represents a real and influential person and/or brand. It’s used on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Brand Partnership

A partnership between two brands or between an influencer and a brand. In the context of social media, it involves these entities pooling resources and working together to promote their respective goods/services to a wider audience through branded content. They also share financial profits and losses.

Business Account

A type of account on a social media platform (such as Instagram or Facebook) that provides a profile and marketing tools specifically designed to help businesses market their brands.

Boosted post

A social media post that you can convert into an advertisement with the goal of increasing your reach and converting sales. Examples of platforms that offer boosted posts as a marketing tool: Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Bio

The section of a social media profile that provides information about the account owner. A business bio should describe the brand and provide contact details. An influencer or marketer bio should describe their services and/or the type of content they produce, plus how to reach them.

C

Competitors

Other brands, influencers, or marketers that you’re competing against for audience members and customers in your niche/industry.

Call To Action

A statement that encourages someone else to perform a specific action. Example: β€œPurchase yours today!” or β€œSign up here!” Also known by its acronym, β€œCTA.”

Collaboration

A temporary relationship between brands and/or creators to create or promote a new project, such as an ad or a product. These entities each use and maintain control over their own resources to achieve their common goal. A collaboration can be paid or unpaid.

Campaign

A coordinated series of events and/or materials that promote/market something. The goal of a campaign is typically to persuade an audience to take a specific action, like make a purchase. Example: a film studio launches a social media marketing campaign to convince audiences to see a new movie.

Caption

The text that accompanies a photo or video social media post and explains or hints at what the content is about. It’s also the most popular place to insert relevant hashtags.

Comments

Text contributed to a post on social media by the creator or their audience members. The comment section serves as a miniature forum where users can express their opinions and converse about the content of the post.

Carousel

A type of post on Instagram in which a user can upload up to 10 photos or videos at one time onto their feed.

Clickbait

A headline or caption online that uses sensationalized text to β€œbait” users into clicking on an article or a social media post. Example: β€œYou’ll never believe what shocking thing Britney Spears said on Instagram!”

Content Curation

The process of curating, which content to show to which users on a social media platform. Users can curate their own content experience by following certain accounts and hashtags. Platforms can also curate content using algorithms.

Content Marketing

A marketing strategy that uses digital content to build a following and also promote a brand, goods, services, etc. Examples: videos, images, articles, and social media posts.

Content Repurposing

The act of repurposing digital content that you previously published, posted, or used online, so that you can use the updated version to drive more engagement. Examples: updating evergreen articles yearly to reflect new data, converting articles into video scripts.

Clubhouse

A social media platform that was launched in April 2020 by Alpha Exploration, Co. It features virtual rooms where users can speak with one another over audio. Some rooms are open to all Clubhouse users, whereas others are limited to whomever the creator of the room selects.

CPM

β€œCost per mille.” This refers to the cost per thousand impressions on an advertisement.

CTR

β€œClick-through rate.” This refers to the percentage of people who visit a webpage, email, or advertisement online and click a specific link on it. The formula for CTR is number of clicks on a link / number of impressions x 100.

Clicks

Times when someone accesses a link on a webpage, email, or advertisement.

Creator

Someone who creates digital content (especially for social media) such as videos, photos, illustrations, and articles.

Content Calendar

A calendar that shows when specific content is scheduled to go live on a social media platform.

Cross Promotion

A strategy in which the same content is promoted across various platforms and websites. Example: reposting an Instagram post on Facebook.

Community Guidelines

A set of rules and policies to regulate user behavior on social media platforms and promote the safety of the online community. Example: Instagram Community Guidelines, Facebook Community Guidelines.

Cache

Software that temporarily stores data from mobile applications as well as webpages. It stores images, text, and other types of data, so that they can be easily reloaded when the user visits a specific webpage, feed, or profile again.

Conversion Rate

The percentage of individuals in your audience who have performed a specific action that you want them to complete. Example: converted to sales. The formula for conversion rate is the number of people who converted / total number of people in the audience x 100.

Cover photo

The header image on a social media profile behind your profile picture that acts as a background or banner for your profile. Examples of social media platforms with cover photos: Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Character count

The number of characters used in the text portion or caption of a social media post.

Channel art

The header image or banner in the background of a YouTube channel.

Copyright

An intellectual property that protects creators and authors of original works from having their creations used without their permission or outright stolen. It applies to any original work as soon as it has been fixed in a tangible form of expression.

Chat

An instant conversation that takes place via texts online and uses a chatbot or a message inbox. Example: Viralyft Live Chat, Facebook Messenger.

Drip Feed

DM

β€œDirect message.”

Dashboard

The main interface in a social media management software or website which displays an overview of your performance data. It also offers easy access to all your social media tools. Example: YouTube Creator Studio.

Demographics

Statistical measurements which are used to describe an audience and their known characteristics, such as age, gender, ethnicity, education level, income, and occupation. This data is key to creating content and marketing it effectively to your target audience.

Direct Message (DM)

A message that is sent directly from one user to another on the same social media platform.

Dead Account

A social media account that is no longer being used because it’s been abandoned by its owner or the owner is deceased.

Duet

A post on TikTok in which you can record a video side-by-side with a video by another creator that already exists.

Dislikes

A type of engagement on social media that is used to express displeasure or dislike for a post or video. This feature can be found on YouTube and on individual comments on TikTok.

Emoji

A pictogram that is used in a text message or social media post to express an emotion or a feeling. Example: Smiley Face, Heart.

Engagement

User interactions with another creator’s social media post. Examples: views, likes, dislikes, reposts.

Engagement rate

The percentage of social media users who follow a creator and interact with their posts. The formula for engagement rate is total engagement / total number of followers x 100.

Evergreen Content

Content that is always relevant and will never be considered out of date. Examples: top 25 articles, how-to videos.

Explore Page

The page on a social media platform that shows what content is currently trending as well as posts that the algorithm has curated for each unique user.

Email Marketing

Marketing goods/services to an audience via a targeted email campaign.

F

Facebook

A social media platform launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg. It is the most used social media website in the world and has more than 3 billion users.

Followers

The plural of β€œfollower.” A group of people who follow and engage with an account on social media.

Facebook Messenger

An instant messaging app that was initially released in August 2011 and is now owned by Meta. It’s connected to Facebook and allows users on that platform to have text, audio, and video conversations with their Friends.

Feed

The main page on a social media platform that displays content to users.

Follower

A user who follows a social media account. Example: Twitter, Instagram, TikTok.

Following

A group of people who follow an account on social media. More generally, it can also refer to a creator’s audience all across the internet, not just on a specific platform.

For You Page (FYP)

The main feed on TikTok that displays a stream of short videos to users based on algorithmic factors, such as which posts are trending and what kind of videos each unique user has been engaging with.

Friends

The official term used to describe Facebook users that follow each other on the platform.

Filter

A parameter set up by a user to remove undesirable content from their main feed on social media.

Fan

Someone who is obsessed with a person, place, or thing. Example: Taylor Swift fans (AKA Swifties).

Fake Followers

Accounts on social media that follow a creator but are operated by bots instead of real people.

Font

Stylized text characters used to add flair to written digital content, such as a social media profile bio.

Fans

The plural of β€œfan.”

Favorites

A section of TikTok where an individual user can save videos that they particularly enjoyed or want to refer to later.

G

Growth

The act of increasing followers and engagement, expanding your sphere of influence, and becoming an influential person on social media.

Giveaway

A contest in which a social media creator promises to give a prize away to a random user who performs a special action, such as liking their post and/or following their account.

GIFs

β€œGraphics Interchange Format.” A digital file that displays a moving image and can be sent via a text message or posted on social media. It’s often used to express a thought or emotion, either alongside or in place of text.

Geotagging

A type of metadata that social media users add to their posts and profiles to indicate where in the world they are located.

Group (Facebook Group)

A collection of users on Facebook that have their own feed separate from the main one. The creator of the Group can make it public (meaning anyone can join it) or private (meaning the administrators must approve all users who wish to join).

Guide

An article or video that guides people online how to do or understand a particular topic. Example: Ultimate Guide To Use Instagram Stories Like a Pro.

Ghosting

The act of someone refusing to answer or reach out to another person again. This term can apply to social media interactions as well as text messages and phone calls.

Google Ads

A pay per click (PPC) advertising program, founded and administered by Google, where marketers can bid for ad space on websites and Google’s social media platforms (i.e., YouTube). Formerly known as Adwords.

H

Highlights

Events, moments, videos, or posts that are considered the most important and that took place over a span of time, such as an influencer’s career or in a brand’s first year in business.

Hashtag

A word written with a β€œ#” symbol in front of it. Hashtags can be included in posts on social media. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok use them to index posts and push them out to the users who will be most interested in them.

Hate Speech

A type of speech online that expresses hatred toward a particular group of people based on their race, religion, gender, disability, or place of origin.

Hootsuite

A social media management software launched on November 28, 2008. It allows users to schedule posts, organize content, obtain analytics, track performance, and more.

Horizontal Video

A horizontally oriented video that fills the screen on a mobile device. Examples: YouTube, TikTok.

Hook

The opening sequence of a video or sentence of a text that grabs your attention and makes you want to keep watching or reading (or to click on a link).

I

Insights

Data about audience behavior on a specific social media platform. Examples: times that users are most likely to be logged in, number of watch hours.

Instagram

A social media platform launched on October 6, 2010, and owned by Meta. It differs from Facebook and Twitter in that it focuses mostly on image and video-based posts (the latter are called Reels) instead of text.

Instagram Alt Text

Text that describes an image on Instagram. It’s used by search engines like Google to learn what the image is about and rank the page that it’s published on in search results. It also enables speech reader software to describe the image to users who can’t see or have low vision. Also known as β€œalternative text.”

Instagram Reels

Short-form videos (maximum 90 seconds long) that are native to Instagram and are streamed to their own feed similar to TikTok.

Illegal Content

Content on social media that promotes, incites, or instructs people on how to commit illegal actions. Examples: posts that depict violent crimes.

Impressions

A measurement of the number of times that a post or an ad is loaded onto a webpage and seen by a user.

Influencer

Someone on social media who is considered to be influential and uses their platform to encourage their followers to perform specific actions, such as purchase a product. Examples: Addison Rae, Kylie Jenner.

Influencer Marketing

A type of marketing that uses influencers on social media to promote goods/services to a target audience.

Influencer Outreach

The process of selecting and contacting influencers to partner, collaborate, or promote a brand or business.

Instagram Highlights

Instagram Story collections that appear on users’ profiles and are organized by the Stories’ original creator.

Instagram pod

A group of Instagram users who engage with and promote each other’s posts. They typically have their own chat where they share their latest content with the rest of the participants.

Instagram Shop

A storefront on Instagram where users can buy products directly from the feeds of the creators whom they follow.

Instagram Saves

A section of Instagram where users can save posts that they want to view or enjoy at a later date.

Live

Happening in real time. Example: livestream.

Link in Bio

The link in a social media profile bio. Influencers often use this feature to direct followers to their Linktree, a product, or other socials.

LinkedIn

A job board/social media platform that was first released on May 5, 2003. It is designed specifically for business owners, marketers, and entrepreneurs to form networks, share news and professional advice from their industry, and post and fill jobs.

Like

A type of engagement on social media which users utilize to indicate that they liked or enjoyed a post.

Likebait

A post on social media which requests other users to β€œlike” it, often in return for something like an entry in a giveaway.

Linktree

A landing page which serves as a hub for wherever a digital creator has a presence on the internet. It typically contains links to the latter’s social media profiles, websites, and promotional products.

M

Misinformation

False or inaccurate information that is spread across social media to confuse and mislead people about a particular topic.

Meme

An image or video that is paired with a poignant or witty caption and is designed to be entertaining, usually in a comedic way.

Moderation

The process of moderating content and conversations on a social media platform to ensure that they align with that platform’s Community Guidelines.

Monetization

A strategy to earn money from posting digital content. Examples: ad revenue, subscriptions to exclusive content, brand sponsorships.

Mention

A method of tagging another user in a Twitter post, so that they will see it. It requires including an β€œ@” symbol in front of the other person’s username. This word also refers to an engagement metric that tracks when a brand or influencer is mentioned by name on the internet.

Mute

A way to remove specific social media users’ posts from your content feed without having to unfollow or block them.

Machine Learning

A form of artificial intelligence that takes in large amounts of data and uses algorithms to improve its performance in a certain task. Social media platforms use machine learning to curate relevant content for individual users.

Metrics

Points of data that are used to gauge performance on social media. Examples: engagement rate, follower growth rate, click-through rate (CTR).

Micro-Influencer

An influencer on social media who has 10,000-100,000 followers on their account.

Macro-Influencer

An influencer on social media who has 100,000-1M followers on their account.

Mega-Influencers

An influencer on social media who has more than 1M followers on their account.

Merchandise

Products that display a business or influencer’s brand logo, theme, and/or other distinctive design elements within their branding. Examples: shirts, hoodies, ball caps.

Niche

A category of content that aligns with a specific interest. Examples: ASMR, Beauty and Fashion, Gaming.

Nano Influencer

An influencer on social media who has between 100 and 10,000 followers on their account.

Native Ads

Ads that are designed to look like they belong on a specific social media platform’s content feed alongside normal posts. Example: in-feed video ads on YouTube.

Notification

An alert on social media that notifies you that you received an engagement with one of your posts. It can also alert you that a creator you follow has uploaded new content.

Organic growth

The process of growing followers and influence on a social media account organically (i.e., without the use of artificial aids like paid engagement).

Original content

Content on the internet (i.e., images, videos, articles, social media posts) that is completely original to the person who uploaded it and wasn’t shared or plagiarized from another user.

Organic Reach

A measurement of how many social media users a creator is reaching with their posts using only organic growth strategies like SEO (i.e., without the use of artificial growth strategies like buying followers or taking out ads).

Polls

A type of post on social media that creators use to learn more about their audience. A poll asks the audience a question and gives them a few answer options. Once enough users make their selection, the poll shows the percentage of respondents who selected each answer.

Paid promotion

The act of a marketer or advertiser paying for the promotion of a brand, product, or service on a social media platform, often in the form of an ad or sponsored post.

Profile picture

The primary photo on a social media profile. It’s typically used to visually represent the profile’s owner. Most users will select a photo of themselves or use a virtual avatar.

Profile

A user’s personal page or feed on a social media platform that displays their posts, media, bio, profile picture, and sometimes other information, as well.

Post

A text-based message or visual content (i.e., photos, videos, GIFs) that is uploaded to a social media platform by a user.

Platform

A networking service for social media where users can connect, share media, and create posts. Examples: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

Podcast

An audio program that is published as episodes onto digital platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. Examples: Archetypes, The History of Rome.

Pinterest

A social media platform released on August 10, 2012, by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp. It was conceptualized as a digital pegboard where users could create and β€œpin” (i.e., save) digital content to β€œboards” (i.e., folders).

Premiere

Premiere by Adobe is a video editing software that creators on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels use to produce content.

Playlist

A list of videos or songs that play one after another in a stream. Creators make playlists to encourage their followers to watch or listen to more of their content in a single session. Examples of platforms that offer playlists: YouTube, Spotify.

Pinned Comments

Comments on a social media post that the original creator of the post flagged as the most important or relevant. In doing so, they move it to the top of the comment section for increased visibility. Examples: Instagram, LinkedIn.

Public Profile

A social media profile that is open and visible to anyone who uses the platform and the internet at large. Any user can follow them and interact with their posts.

Private Profile

A social media profile that is private or protected, meaning not everyone can follow them or engage with their posts. The private account owner must approve all new followers.

Q

Quality Content

Digital content that has quality in terms of creativity, originality, attention to detail, video quality, and image quality. It is more likely to attract more engagement than content with no quality.

Quiz

A test that is designed to reveal something about the person taking it based on the answers they choose. It is also an Instagram Sticker that can be added to Stories and Reels.

QnA

β€œQuestions and answers.” A public forum on social media during which a creator or influencer will take questions from their audience and answer them.

A Tweet that a Twitter user (not the original creator of the post) reposts to their own feed.

Spam

Unwanted comments, messages, or content posted to a social media platform or sent to a user in bulk. The purpose of spam is to trick users into clicking on viruses or scam them into sending them money or revealing private information.

Shares

A type of social media engagement where a user reposts or sends posts to other users both on and off the platform.

Snapchat

Schedule

Followers of a social media account that the owner of the account β€œtargeted” by marketing to them specifically.

Telegram

An instant messaging service launched on August 14, 2013, by Nikolai and Pavel Durov. As of January 2023, it was the fourth most popular messaging app in the world.

Trends

Topics on social media that a large number of users are posting about and searching for. Examples: celebrities, places, films, television shows, and movements.

Tags

A type of metadata on YouTube that helps index videos and rank them in relevant search results. It consists of keywords that describe what the video is about.

Twitch

A livestreaming platform that initially came out on June 6, 2011. It’s especially popular among gamers/influencers like Ninja and MrBeast. It was founded by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear.
